Earlier this month, SDSN Director Jeffrey Sachs and Pontifical Academy of Sciences Chancellor Monsignor Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo concluded the eleventh and final meeting of the two-year Ethics in Action for Sustainable and Integral Development initiative. The Ethics in Action working group, consisting of select religious leaders, theologians, academics, business and labor leaders, development practitioners, and activists, was assembled to identify the values and ethical paradigms required for sustainable development. For each of ten thematic areas of focus (including the ethics of poverty, climate justice, the future of work, etc.), the working group produced consensus statements containing analysis, recommendations, and internal action steps, all with particular attention to the guidelines of the Sustainable Development Goals and Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’.
Next, Ethics in Action will develop a final volume of proceedings for publication and, in partnership with SDG Academy, produce a MOOC to communicate its multi-religious moral consensus across diverse religious communities and other stakeholders. Ethics in Action is supported by SDSN, the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Religions for Peace, the University of Notre Dame, the Blue Chip Foundation, the Fetzer Foundation, Ms. Christina Lee Brown, Ms. Jacqueline Corbelli, and others.
