Israel Klabin has a BA Degree in Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, a Master’s Degree in Mathematics and Physics, and a Maître de Conférence from the Institut d´Études Politiques in Paris, France. He is a former Mayor of Rio de Janeiro and was one of the Brazilian organizers of the United Nations Conference on the Environment (Rio 92).
His strong interest in environmental issues has led him to the path of sustainable development, a concept which has guided his plans and projects in the ecological field. He has founded, along with 24 national and international corporations, the Brazilian Foundation for Sustainable Development (FBDS), which he has presided since its creation in 1992. He is also member of the Board of Directors of Klabin Irmãos & Co., a family holding that controls one of the largest forestry companies in Latin America.
Dr. Klabin has published a great number of articles and presented conferences to different national and international universities and institutions (he is a member of the Board of Governors of Tel Aviv University), such as The World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank, where he was a member of the IDB Independent Advisory Group on Sustainability. He is the author of the book “The Urges of the Present” launched in September 2011.
Dr. Klabin was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is married and the father of 7 children.
