SDSN researchers Serik Orazgaliyev and Aliya Sembayeva contributed to the 4th Production Gap Report published by the UNEP and SEI, which tracks the discrepancy between governments’ planned fossil fuel production and global production levels consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C or 2°C. Particularly, they provided input to Kazakhstan’s country profile, evaluating governments’ latest climate ambitions and their plans, policies, and strategies that support fossil fuel production or the transition away from it. The report was widely discussed in reputable media outlets, such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Guardian.

SDSN Kazakhstan hosted its annual large-scale thematic conferences on the SDGs. The first was held in May 2023, and covered three research priority areas of SDSN Kazakhstan: 1) Land, Water, and Communities; 2) Energy and Climate; and 3) Education and Partnerships. It brought 350 participants from academia to government, to non-profit organizations and broader civil society. In 2024, the 2nd annual conference on ‘Localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across sectors in Central Asia’ will take place, where challenges in SDG localization and implementation both at national and subnational levels across a variety of sectors will be discussed.
