The Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA) Launches New Website

On February 19, 2025, the Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA) launched its new website, a platform to share scientific knowledge, strengthening the collective effort to address the ongoing challenges faced by the Amazon and its people.

The Amazon is the largest tropical forest on the planet, providing essential services such as climate regulation, water and carbon cycles, biodiversity, and a rich cultural heritage. Home to an extraordinary number of species and diverse Indigenous and local cultures, the Amazon faces increasing threats, from deforestation and climate change to social and economic pressures. The SPA, an independent group of 300 scientists from Amazonian countries and around the world, works to provide science-based recommendations for conserving the Amazon and ensuring a sustainable future. This diverse group includes Indigenous and local scientists who bring essential perspectives to the work of the SPA.

The new SPA website is designed to make the work of this diverse group widely available, serving as a dynamic and accessible hub for knowledge with improved navigation, speed, and content structure. Key features of the site include:

  • Easy Access to Resources: Policy Briefs and other publications, including the 2021 Amazon Assessment Report, known as the "encyclopedia of the Amazon," offer critical insights into the state of the region and sustainable solutions for its conservation and sustainable development.
  • Multilingual Functionality: The website is available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, making its resources accessible to a broad audience.
  • SPA Members Directory: Updated and detailed information about the experts behind the SPA’s work, who contribute to the Panel's extensive research and policy recommendations.
  • Enhanced News and Events Section: A dedicated space for the SPA’s latest updates, announcements, and past event recordings, providing a valuable resource for staying informed on the latest developments in Amazon science and policy.
  • Information about the Amazon: Insights into the Amazon’s importance, the challenges it faces, and the solutions proposed by the SPA for a sustainable future.

The launch of this new website highlights the increasing importance of making the SPA’s science-based recommendations easily accessible across the region and worldwide.
