SDSN Southeast Asia Facilitates the Pre-Inauguration of Nationhood and Sustainable Development

On November 26, 2024, the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI) hosted the Pre-Inauguration of Kebangsaan dan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (KKPB), or Nationhood and Sustainable Development, in Jakarta, Indonesia. Facilitated by SDSN Southeast Asia and the United in Diversity (UID) Foundation, this event represents a significant step in integrating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within Indonesia’s governance framework and legislative measures.

Muhammad Akbar Supratman, the youngest Deputy Chairperson of MPR RI, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the critical role of youth in driving SDG-focused innovation. “The parliamentary caucus for SDGs is not merely a discussion forum but a tangible action by the MPR RI to support the SDG agenda, which is crucial for future generations,” he stated.

The Deputy Minister of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS), Febrian Alphyanto Ruddyard, further enriched the discussions with an insightful presentation on the government’s strategic approach to achieving the SDGs. He emphasized the application of Theory U as a transformative framework to tackle systemic challenges and invigorate innovative, SDG-aligned solutions.

In his closing remarks, Ahmad Muzani, Chairperson of MPR RI, underscored the caucus's pivotal role in optimizing development outcomes. He stated, “This caucus aims to achieve optimal development outcomes through unity, with the 4 National Pillars — NKRI, Pancasila, UUD 1945, and Bhineka Tunggal Ika — serving as the foundation.” He also stressed the need to align the SDG agenda with these pillars, creating a cohesive roadmap for sustainable development in Indonesia.

SDSN Southeast Asia played a pivotal role in supporting this initiative, providing expertise and leadership to align governance frameworks with the SDGs. Through its ongoing efforts, SDSN Southeast Asia fosters collaboration between government institutions, civil society, and academic stakeholders to advance policies that address systemic challenges and promote sustainable development. Its role in facilitating the KKPB underscores its commitment to integrating SDG principles into actionable governance strategies across the region.

The event officially launched with a 1.5 day training, including focused group discussion, on November 28–30, 2024. Facilitated by UID, the FGD convened expert staff from MPR, the People's Representative Council (DPR) and Regional Representative Council (DPD) to generate actionable insights and establish a strong foundation for effective policy implementation.

Moving forward, the Parliamentary Caucus on SDGs will continue to advocate for integrating SDGs into parliamentary discussions and decision-making processes. ensuring a cohesive and strategic approach toward achieving the sustainable development goals at all levels of governance.

This groundbreaking initiative aspires to foster meaningful dialogue, build a unified commitment to sustainable development, and lay the groundwork for impactful, long-term change in Indonesia.
