SDSN Malaysia Chapter Launched

The SDSN Malaysia chapter was launched on Oct 10th, 2013 by Mr. P. Kamalanathan, Deputy Minister of Education, Government of Malaysia. His speech has been made available online. Prof. Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the SDSN and Director of The Earth Institute, Columbia University and Prof. Zakri Abdul Hamid, Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of Malaysia were also present.

The event, held at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, featured two panel discussions; one on sustainable development best practices and the other on the role of universities in crafting sustainable development solutions. An audience of over 300 attended the launch, drawn from universities, the private and public sectors, professional associations and think tanks. A compilation, “Rising to the Challenge”, on ongoing sustainable development efforts was released on the occasion. The event was successfully organized by the Office of the Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of Malaysia, with the support of the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT).

On Oct. 9th a roundtable discussion on key sustainable development partners in Malaysia was held at the Prime Minister’s Office. Earlier that day, Prof. Jeffrey Sachs gave a public lecture entitled “Alternative Visions of the World Economy in 2030”, organized by Sunway University.
