On Friday, December 13, 2024, the University of the West Indies (UWI) Global Institute for Climate Smart and Resilient Development (GICSRD) and the UWI School of Education Cave Hill Campus organized a Climate and Education Symposium focused on climate education in the Caribbean and building resilience for future generations.

With climate change a key topic, the Symposium was held shortly after the UNFCCC Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku (November 11-22, 2024) and the 13th Caribbean Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) Conference (December 2-6, 2024). Speakers argued that climate change and its impacts should be a key topic discussed and taught in educational settings. The Symposium aimed to:

  1. To enable stakeholders to share what has been done in climate education.
  2. To identify gaps in education whether formal/informal and plan for the next 5-10 years.
  3. To enable secondary school teachers to share climate education experiences.

This event was well attended by a range of speakers, including representatives from the SDSN Global Schools Program. You can learn more about the University of the West Indies and SDSN Caribbean here.
