SDGs Today Wins Best Story Map at UN World Data Forum

On November 13, 2024, SDGs Today was awarded “Best Story” at the UN World Data Forum’s ArcGIS StoryMaps Competition for "The Impact of War on Health and Education in Gaza," a data story developed in partnership with the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).

Launched in 2020, SDGs Today provides a snapshot of the state of sustainable development around the world, fostering data partnerships to co-develop interactive and accessible data products. The team co-designs real-world applications and stories to humanize quantitative data and communicate the impact of data on decision-making and various stakeholder groups. The program offers training and educational programs to support governments, academics and youth to produce, share and engage with the data to help ensure that we meet the global goals by 2030.

SDGs Today’s latest data story, “The Impact of War on Health and Education in Gaza,” showcases the severe disruption of essential services since October 7, 2023, due to Israel's war on Gaza. Using data and analysis from PCBS, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Insecurity Insight, the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS), and SDGs Today, this StoryMap highlights casualties, injuries, and attacks on educational and healthcare facilities during the ongoing war in Gaza. This powerful story uses geographic information systems (GIS) to spotlight complex global issues, and calls for peace and justice.
