Building a Sustainable Culture: Key Results on Culture and SDGs Shared at High-Level Event
As part of its commitment to advancing the 2030 Agenda, REDS-SDSN Spain has been at the forefront of promoting the vital role of culture in sustainable development. Under the initiative “The Cultural Dimension of the 2030 Agenda,” the network has worked to integrate cultural perspectives into the SDGs by publishing reports, organizing dialogues, and engaging with policymakers and cultural institutions.
REDS-SDSN Spain has received support from the Spanish Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs, and the 2030 Agenda for several years. The results of this partnership were showcased at a high-level event in Madrid on November 22, 2024, where SDSN Spain’s efforts were recognized as key for advancing sustainable development.
The Minister of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs, and the 2030 Agenda, Pablo Bustinduy, opened the event by highlighting the relationship between culture and sustainable development is essential for addressing current challenges. Paula Fernández-Wulff Barreiro, General Director of the 2030 Agenda in Spain, emphasized the importance of appropriately concluding this four-year effort, underscoring the role of continuity in such collaborations. Estíbaliz Sáez de Cámara Oleaga, Vice President of REDS-SDSN Spain, stressed that collaboration and alliances are key to implementing the SDGs, with a special focus on SDG 17 as the backbone of this work.
The meeting included a panel moderated by Prof. Alfons Martinell, Scientific Director of the Culture and Sustainable Development Knowledge and Practice Community at REDS-SDSN Spain. Panelists discussed the challenges facing the transversal integration of culture into the 2030 Agenda, the role of cultural institutions in the SDGs, and the experiences in rural areas promoting culture as a tool for sustainable development. Subsequently, Armando Soria Bueno, Mayor of Urriés, and Jesica Lorenzo presented their work on the Cultural Incubator for the Onsella Valley, a project promoting cultural action in rural areas.
This event not only celebrated the achievements of recent years but also set the stage for exploring new alliances and strategies to integrate culture as a driver of sustainable development in 2025.
