The mission of UN-Habitat is to promote sustainable urbanization through policy formulation, institutional reform, capacity-building, technical cooperation and advocacy, and to monitor and improve the state of human settlements worldwide.

UN-Habitat is responsible for the implementation of international technical cooperation projects with all kind of partners in eight urban themes: urban legislation, land & governance, urban planning & design, urban economy, urban basic services , housing and slum upgrading, risk reduction and rehabilitation, research and capacity building. The major project implemented in Rio de Janeiro is Rio+Social programme in partnership with the Pereira Passos Institute of the City Hall, in most of the pacified favelas of the city.
