The Royal University of Bhutan is the leading higher education institution in Bhutan. The Royal University of Bhutan’s principal activities relating to sustainable development are “Teaching, Research and Service”, all of which will be carried out within the framework of the university’s guiding philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH) inspired-education. Some of the projects and initiatives completed or underway include: 1) introduction of GNH/Universal Human Values as a foundational course in the university; 2) Participatory action research aimed to institute a GNH approach to teaching and learning through contemplative and critical pedagogies; 3) Enhancement of ‘mindfulness practice and contemplation’ and establishment of ‘Mindfulness Education Associations’ in all RUB colleges; 4) development of the Institute for Gross National Happiness Studies as a research think-tank; 5) introduction of a Bachelor’s programme in sustainable development (in the College of Natural Resources); 6) introduction of a Master’s programme in development practice by the Department of Sustainable Development (in College of Natural Resources); 7) establishment of the Centre for Rural Development Studies (in College of Natural Resources; 8) establishment of Centre for Climate Change and Spatial Information (in Sherubtse College); 9) establishment of Centre for Appropriate Technology (Jigme Namgyal Polytechnic); and 10) development of university research policies for “sustainable development, innovation, and creative enterprise that support and enhance the wellbeing and happiness of the people in the nation and those beyond”
