The International Institute for Sustainability (IIS) is an organization based in the city of Rio de Janeiro that is dedicated to promoting the transition to sustainability. IIS develops in line with the emerging field of Sustainability Science interdisciplinary research, provides assistance to governments, intergovernmental agencies, NGOs and businesses seeking solutions to their sustainability challenges and develops and implements projects. The main focus of IIS is sustainable land use, combining production requirements, environmental services and social development.

Founded in 2009 (then as “GAEA Institute”), IIS has actively contributed to some of the most urgent challenges of sustainability in global and local scale, like climate change, food security, poverty reduction and biodiversity conservation. They publish scientific articles and reports on these topics and provide advice to the United Nations, the World Bank, Conservation International, WWF, the Department of Energy and Climate Change of the United Kingdom, among others. IIS is part of the Brazilian Panel on Climate Change (chapters of Agriculture and Forestry) and are involved in projects in several Brazilian states and biomes of the Amazon, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest.
