2019 SDSN Awards of Excellence 
SDSN and the SDG Academy have opened the call for submissions for the 2019 SDSN Awards of Excellence. Institutions from the SDSN academic community can submit their MOOCs on sustainable development until 15 June 2019. The first placed institution will be invited to host its course on the SDG Academy edX platform.

Public Consultation on 2019 Sustainable Development Report Launched 
On 29 April Bertelsmann Stiftung and SDSN published draft findings of the 2019 report for public review and consultation. The report rates country performance on the SDGs. We are seeking comments through to 17 May for inclusion in the report, which will be published in late June ahead of the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF).

Crowd-Sourcing Campaign of Biodiversity Launched 
As part of the Nature Map project, SDSN invites citizen-scientists to join two campaigns: the “Human Impact on Forest” campaign to contribute information on the intensity of human signs on forests and the iNaturalistcampaign aimed at improving our knowledge of flowering plant species distribution in Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, and Turkey.

New Reports Profile Sub-National SDG Monitoring Worldwide 
Through a 2018-2019 microgrant program, SDSN and its thematic network TReNDSsupported data localization efforts in Aruba, Brazil, Colombia, India, and the U.S. The grantees’ reports, which include downloadable draft indicator frameworks and mockups of data dashboards, are available now.

2019 SDG Happiness Festival 
For the second year in a row, SDSN Southeast Asia co-hosted the SDG Happiness Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia. This year over 20,000 Indonesians were invited to participate in two days of celebration including public workshops on sustainability, an array of vendors practicing new business models around sustainability, and a series of musical performances to showcase the richness of Indonesian culture.

  • SDSN REDS (Spain) published a report titled Environmental Education in Spain. Reflections and Proposals. It covers the trajectory of environmental education over the last 30 years in the country.
  • SDSN and the SDG Center for Africa hosted a high-level side event at the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development in Morocco to present the 2018 Africa SDG Index and Dashboards report  to senior government officials from all African countries, international organizations, and civil society.
  • On 17 April, SDSN USA hosted planners, designers, architects, community organizers, and academics to discuss the challenges and opportunities of incorporating the SDGs into planning, design, policy, and action in cities.
  • Read the inaugural report of SDSN TReNDS’ Contracts for Data Collaboration (C4DC) project, which analyzes data sharing agreements and produces tools to understand opportunities and challenges inherent to data sharing.
  • SDSN Youth attended the 2019 UN Youth ECOSOC Forum where two members participated at the Trusteeship Council and nine others shared their insights during several side-events.
  • On 29 April, SDSN Indonesia co-hosted a symposium at the National Library of Science of Indonesia to explore the role of science to support the SDGs, and to launch the SDG Hub at the University of Indonesia.
  • SDSN Youth Australia, New Zealand & Pacific has issued a call to action to the Australian Government, ahead of the Australian Federal Election on May 18 to bring attention to the need for urgent action to advance SDG implementation.
  • The SDG Academy launched a brand new course, Sustainable Development: The Post-Capitalist Order, in which SDSN Director Jeffrey Sachs examines the shortcomings of global capitalism and shows why sustainable development is the way forward. Enroll today!

  • SDSN Member Gaia Education’s Worldview dimension online program, aimed at supporting the redesign of the human presence on Earth, launches on 20 May and runs for eight weeks.
  • SDSN Partner InterAction has released their draft Manifesto to Secure a Healthy Planet for All – A Call for Emergency Action which is being developed in response to the increasing evidence of the urgency required to address our growing global climate and environmental crisis.
  • Paul Polman, an SDSN Leadership Council Member discussed “What does it mean to lead a multi-stakeholder company?” at IESE Barcelona on 26 April.
  • SDSN Leadership Council Member Vladimir Mau will take part in Russian-Spanish roundtable on university cooperation.
  • SDSN Leadership Council co-chair Amina Mohammed will inaugurate the third meeting of the forum of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on sustainable development.
  • Robbert Dijkgraaf, IAS Director, Leon Levy Professor, and SDSN Leadership Council Member hosted an “Ask Me Anything” session on the AskScience Reddit forum on 18 April.
  • SDSN’s Jessica Espey and Nilda Mesa’s chapter from the book Smarter New York City was featured at Columbia University’s SIPA event, “Smarter New York City: How City Agencies Innovate.”
