On October 13-14, 2014, Achim Dobermann, Co-Chair of Thematic Group 7 on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems, hosted a meeting at Rothamsted Research in Harpenden, England, to discuss a solutions initiative on applying backcasting approaches to agricultural systems. Rothamsted is almost certainly the oldest agricultural research station in the world. In 1843, they started the first of a series of long-term field experiments – some continue to this day, proving unique insights to agricultural sustainability. At the conclusion of the meeting, country teams from China, the UK, and Uruguay agreed to set targets for their agricultural systems in 2030/2050 and model pathways to achievement. Selected targets will be closely aligned with the SDGs on agriculture and food security. Additional countries will be invited to join this initiative.
