On May 14, 2014, the SDSN in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the China Agricultural University (CAU), held a meeting in Beijing, China, to discuss opportunities for collaboration.

Achim Dobermann, Co-Chair of the Thematic Group on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security, presented a summary of the post-2015 process, the SDSN’s work on agriculture, and potential new initiatives going forward. Mei Xurong, Director General of the Department of Research Management of CAAS, provided and overview of scientific innovations to strengthen Chinese agriculture and increase food security in China. Fusuo Zhang, Professor at China Agricultural University and member of the SDSN Thematic Group on agriculture, discussed several concrete examples for transforming Chinese agriculture towards higher productivity combine with large increases in resource use efficiency and soil quality. Ms. Yaping Liu, Director of the Grain and Oil Production Section of the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, provided an overview of the new government plan for transforming agriculture in China, which places strong emphasis on improving the quality of land, increasing input use efficiency and improving the environment. It will require integration of many technology and policy innovations in a strategic but tailored manner.

SDSN will pursue a specific solutions initiative on methodologies for designing national pathways for a sustainable agricultural intensification, with China to become one of the key partners.
