Lena Treschow Torell is a professor of Physics at Chalmers University. From 1998-2001 she held a position within the European Commission in Brussels as research director of the Joint Research Centre (JRC). She was in charge of the overall JRC research program carried out by 8 institutes placed all over Europe. Main research areas covered nuclear safety issues and energy research, chemicals and food safety, and environmental issues especially air quality.

From 2001-2011 she was first president and thereafter chairman of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA). During 2008-2012 she was chairman of Euro-CASE, the European Council of Applied Sciences, Technologies and Engineering (Paris). Lena Treschow Torell is heavily engaged in industrial related research and technology development. She has served on the board of several industrial linked, research institutes (SP, IFP. IMEGO, IRECO), and in advisory committees for the energy sector (Vattenfall AB, Sydkraft AB). She is presently chairman for MISTRA (the Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research) and chairman of Chalmers University of Technology.

She has been board member of some notified companies, (Getinge AB, Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson, Gambro AB and Micronic Mydata AB). She is presently a board member of Saab AB, SKF AB, Investor AB and ÅF AB. She is a member of the strategy committee of the Swedish Foreign Minister. She has received the Seraphim Medal from H.M the King Carl XVI Gustaf.
