Clovis Torres was appointed Vale S.A.’s Executive Director for Human Resources, Sustainability, Compliance and General Counsel in August 2016. Previously, from July 2011 to July 2016, he served as General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer. He developed his career at large companies in Brazil and abroad, working in several sectors in the legal, HR, institutional and community relations, energy, environment and finance areas.

He was the Executive Vice President of Bahia Mineração Ltda. from September 2007 to July 2011, during which time he led the implementation of the Pedra Iron Project, a complex designed to produce 25 million metric tons of iron ore per year. In May 2003, he joined Vale, where he remained until September 2007, as Director of the Corporate Legal Department. During this period, he worked on a number of major merger and acquisition projects for Vale abroad.

From December 2000 to May 2003, he was a partner in the law firm  Machado, Meyer, Sendaz e Opice Advogados, in the corporate and banking areas, conducting activities to support domestic and international investment, mergers and acquisitions, project finance and private equity. Between January 1997 and December 2000, he was a senior lawyer at the International  Finance Corporation in the United States, providing legal support for     projects in the areas of agriculture, telecommunications and energy. From August 1995 to January 1997, he was a senior lawyer at Cargill Agrícola S.A., where his duties involved all areas of law, including labour and tax. He also worked as a senior lawyer at Clyde & Co International Law Firm, in Brazil and England, between June 1993 and July 1995, when he worked on drafting and negotiating contracts in the construction and energy sectors, purchase and sale agreements, and documents related to loans and joint ventures.

From May 2015 to November 2015, he chaired the Board of Directors of Petrobras Distribuidora S.A. and served on the Board of Directors of Petrobras S.A. He is currently the Chairman of the Managing Council of the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM), the Vice President of the National Iron and Base Metals Mining Trade Association (SINFERBASE), a member of the   Corporate Law Commission of the Brazilian Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil – OAB), a member of the Board of Trustees of Fundação Getulio Vargas, and a member of the Economics Council of the Rio de Janeiro State Federation of Industry (Federação das Indústrias do Estado do Rio de Janeiro – FIRJAN).

He has a bachelor’s degree in law from the Catholic University of Salvador and a master’s in international law, trade and finance from Tulane Law School, Louisiana, United States. He also has an executive MBA from Fundação Getulio Vargas in São Paulo, and he has taken several courses on management, leadership, corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), and INSEAD.
