    SDG Index and Dashboards for European Cities

    SDSN  in partnership with the Brabant Center for Sustainable Development (Telos, Tilburg University), released the first-ever SDG Index and Dashboards Report for European Cities. The report compares the performance of capital cities and a selection of large metropolitan areas in the European-Union (EU) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In total, results for 45 European cities are presented in this first prototype version using 56 indicators.

    The SDSN was commissioned by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) to identify ways to strengthen evidence based policy making in the EU in the context of the SDGs and Agenda 2030. The study on “Exposing EU policy gaps to address the Sustainable Development Goals” highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the current official monitoring of the SDGs conducted by the European Commission via Eurostat and makes 4 recommendations to the EESC to strengthen the involvement of civil society organizations in the measurement and implementation of the SDGs.

    In January 2019, SDSN hosted a workshop alongside the 2019 Winter Meeting of the US Conference of Mayors with practitioners and experts to discuss their experiences and consider lessons detailed in the draft practitioner guide: “A Pathway to Sustainable American Cities: A Guide to Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.” This guide, a re-imagining of a 2016 guide prepared for a global urban audience, presents 10 steps for cities to consider on their way to adapting and adopting the global framework for their own city.

    SDSN USA Launch: Moving America Forward

    On December 4, 2018 the US chapter of the SDSN was launched at Columbia University in New York. The chapter is co-directed by academic centers at Columbia University, Yale University, and the University of California San Diego. The SDSN USA joins 29 existing SDSN networks that are creating new online courses, educating their students and the general public, working with governments, engaging and empowering young people, and offering innovative solutions for the SDGs.

    Leaving No U.S. City Behind: The 2018 U.S. Cities SDGs Index

    The U.S. Cities SDG Index report analyzes 44 indicators for each city to provide a comprehensive assessment of sustainable development challenges related to environmental, social, and economic objectives.  It is intended as a planning tool for cities, highlighting areas of strength and weakness and where opportunities exist to learn from other cities.  It includes a quick-reference dashboard that rates each city’s performance on 15 of the 17 SDGs, as well as a series of maps showing relative performance in different parts of the country.

    Decarbonizing the Northeast U.S. – Cost Effective Road Maps to Achieve the Region’s Emissions Reduction Targets

    In a new study, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and its partners show that present policies in New York State and the New England States are insufficient to achieve the region’s declared greenhouse gas emission reduction goals. The study then describes a detailed road map for achieving the region’s goal of reducing these climate-altering emissions 80% or more below 1990 levels by 2050 while maintaining high standards of living and economic growth.

    SDSN Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems hosted this fully-online conference from 3-5 June, 2019. Nutrition-sensitive agriculture offers great potential for achieving SDG 2, as it connects agricultural development to improved nutrition outcomes. For each SDG, the Atlas explores potential opportunities and impacts from renewable energy project development, and provides recommendations for companies to better align conduct to the Sustainable Development Agenda. In doing so, the industry stands to bolster the sector’s reputation, attract and retain investors, and minimize risk. Building on the success of our earlier mapping project, Mapping Mining to the Sustainable Development Goals: An Atlas, this Atlas also pays special attention to the interconnections of the human rights framework with the SDGs.
